‘Sesame Street’ debuts Ji-Young, first Asian American muppet

The makers of “Sesame Street” launched a PR blitz alerting the media that the show has its first Asian American character: Ji-Young. The show’s executive vice-president of Creative and Production Kay Wilson Stallings said it was important for the show to “meet the moment” and diversify following the death of George Floyd. Kathleen Kim, who will be playing the new muppet, said the show will use the character to address racism, “My one hope, obviously, is to actually help teach what racism is, help teach kids to be able to recognize it and then speak out against it.”
